Workaholism Is it an epidemic

Workaholism Is it an epidemicWorkaholism Is it an epidemicFueled by economic fears, 24/7 virtual availability and a collective cultural mindset of employees deriving their entire self-worth and identity from their job title and performance, its no surprise that workaholism is becoming the default base line for the US worker.Lisa Orb-Austin, PhD, is a psychologist with a Manhattan practice who focuses on career issues. She defines the workaholic- noting the word workaholic is an understood pop culture buzzword, rather than clinical- as someone who is compelled to work because of internal pressure. Working beyond what is reasonably expected, she explains, and having negative consequences, listing poor health, relationship problems, burnout, and mental health issues. A workaholic might be that employee who works 60 hours a week, when only expected to work, and financially compensated for, 40 hours.Orb-Austin has found the imposter phenomenon to be a common underlying issue among many wo rkaholics. People who feel like theyve always got to prove themselves because theyre not really as good as people think, explains Orb-Austin. These employees, no matter how senior with excellent track records, believe its only a matter of time before their incompetence will be revealed. Sometimes people grow up being told they are not smart, so they think, I dont really have intelligence, all I have is the ability to work hard, adds Orb-Austin.Roy Cohen, a career coach for Wall Street professionals believes workholism needs to be examined holistically. It often occurs with other issues, says Cohen, who occasionally brings his miniature Labradoodle to the office. It could be that theres an obsessive compulsive disorder, which leads to workaholism, he explains, noting that anxiety, long standing issues with depression, and ADHD have also been linked to workaholism. There are no concrete statistics on workaholism per say, but its anecdotally evident that offices throughout the US- from gleaming towers in cities to 70s-style suburban office parks- are filled with employees willing to work far beyond whats expected by their superiors. But what about the realities of layoffs, automation, ageism, outsourcing, and the skyrocketing cost of living? Doesnt the average employee have to work around the clock to just survive, never mind advance? Yes and no. Those grappling with workaholism must figure out their own sense of priorities and what brings them fulfillment. There are some people whose lives are their work, and theyre very passionate about what they are doing, says Cohen. He adds that if there are no problems at home as a result, That actually sounds like they just dont have enough time in the day.Orb-Austin disagrees. She points out that although a compulsive worker might not have any acute negative consequences, employment can change on a dime. Lay-offs happen. Unemployment is depressing for most people, but absolutely devastating for those who only feel worthy whe n working, and see themselves as their job title. The unemployed workaholic is left with a terrifying loss of identity and self-worth. Since they havent cultivated interests, they havent an inkling what brings them joy outside a working environment. Never mind having no support system since they havent cultivated relationships should catastrophe hit, physical or emotional. So what should one do if they feel they are walking the fine line of healthy competitive working and using work as a drug to avoid emotions? Most people use work as a refuge from life periodically, but for others its a pattern. For those who feel their emotional, physical, even spiritual life might be in jeopardy from working compulsively, a variety of help is available. The first step is recognizing the problem, second is the willingness to do something about it. A quick google search shows where meetings for the 12-step program Workaholics Anonymous take place, as well as WAs virtual meetings. Numerous books have been published on the subject including Workaholics Anonymous Book of Recovery, which can be purchased online. Therapists who specialize in work issues often provide individual and group sessions. For some people seeking relief from workaholism, like Jennifer who lives in Florida, WA meetings have provided sufficient help. But for others, those who might be spooked by the Higher Power, aka God, aspect of WA (FYI, you can be an atheist WA literature even suggests Goddess, Great Spirit, among other entities as a substitute for God) or those who feel they need the big guns, seek help from trained professionals.Orb-Austin believes career coaching is where the workaholic can figure out underlying issues and triggers that ignite workaholic tendencies. She offered several of her suggestions, however each profession has its peculiarities, so they cant be applied to all. Set clear boundaries about work availability if possible. Its not always easy, admits Orb-Austin. She suggests a concise, A fter this time, Im unavailable. Turn off notifications on the cell phone, remove work email from the phone on weekends. Develop other parts of oneself outside work. Work at being present. Orb-Austin teaches the majority of her clients how to meditate and be present in their lives. It helps them to discern if something is urgent, says Orb-Austin, or if it can be taken care of tomorrow. It might be scary to address workaholism, as nasty goblins of the soul can emerge while parsing out deep-seated issues of emotional avoidance. It might not be immediate, but the process eventually pays off with peace of mind. As for rectifying the workaholic epidemic? In the words of former comedian, now Minnesota Sen. Al Franken Its easier to put on slippers than to carpet the whole world.

3D Printing Robots on Demand

3D Printing Robots on Demand 3D Printing Robots on Demand 3D Printing Robots on DemandRoboticist Daniela Rus found out just how right the philosopher Plato welches when he wrote, Necessity is the mother of invention. She was teaching in the computer science department at Dartmouth in the mid-1990s, her first faculty position after earning a Ph.D. from Cornell, and she wanted to start a robotics lab. But the university did not have the facilities to do so nor were students trained to use lathes, CNC machines, and the like. One thing she knew, though, was that her students knew how to program. At the time, there was this new technology just becoming available, called rapid prototyping. Why not give it a try, she thought. Instead of machining, we could 3D print the models, Rus says. So she spent almost her entire startup budget to invest in a 3D printer that allowed her (and her students) to take a non-traditional approach to building robots. An unrealized benefit at the time It gave her a head start in the field. Now, two decades later as director of MITs Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), she and her team have developed an approach for printing dynamic robots, a real step toward having a robot technically walk itself out of the printer. As roboticists, we want to print an entire robotic system with the saatkorn ease as I print a paper, says Rus, who oversees the project.A scene from RViz, a 3D software that lets user visualize different types of ROS data. Image ROSThe key is a technique they developed that enables the simultaneous printing of solids and geschmolzens. The team calls this printable hydraulics. Current technology allows only the printing of solid components, which means the body of the robot can be printed, but the actuation systems must be developed, assembled, and installed separately. This new method enables the complete encapsulation of liquids that can be enclosed in the body of the robot during the printing process. With that, we can begin to develop models that encapsulate hydraulic actuation, Rus says. As we move liquids from one part of the system to the other, it effectively creates movement.Using an off-the-shelf inkjet 3D printer modified by the team, the robot is built layer-by-layer from the bottom up by depositing individual droplets of materials 20 to 30 microns in diameter each. According to team member Robert MacCurdy, MIT postdoctoral researcher, 3D inkjet printing allows the use of eight different materials deposited adjacent to one another all at the same time. Then, high-intensity UV light solidifies all of the materials except for the liquids. To show the concept, the team 3D printed a tiny, six-legged, insect-like robot, approximately 5.5 inches long, 3.5 inches wide, and 2.5 inches tall, weighing just 24 ounces. The robot crawls powered by 12 hydraulic pumps, or bellows, embedded in the body, which transmit force. As roboticists, we want to print an entire robotic system with the same ease as I print a paper.Daniela Rus, director, CSAIL, MITThe network of bellows and channels allows the liquid to move through the system, Rus explains. Moving this liquid through the system allows us to make different movements. We get the legs to move in a way that enables a tripod gait for the robot.Aside from a motor and power supply, every component was printed in a single step with no assembly required. Rus saysthe big engineering challenge was determining how to configure a 3D printer to enable the creation of such complex systems in other words, how to design systems that use modules that can create linear and rotational motion and then compose them into an actual working system. The insect is a very complex system, she says. Its remarkable you could build that without needing any manual assembly. The team began working on the project in the summer of 2015. We tried a number of different designs and variations on the design. The first ones did not work so well, she sa ys. As the team continued to experiment, they came upon the one that worked, using an off-the-shelf 3D printer that they modified. They have plans down the road to create their own printer. There are many advantages to using this technique to create robots, including flexibility in design after a template is made (to customize the robot for the task it will be used for) speed and lower cost. Although the insect-like robot took 22 hours to print, the researchers said that wasnt a long time considering its complexity. Accelerating the process is most dependent on improvement of the printers themselves, Rus adds. Its very interesting how needs inspire innovation, she says. My need at Dartmouth was to make robots, and I had certain resources. Buying this big machine gave me a very interesting new approach.Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer.

John Harrison

John Harrison John Harrison John HarrisonJohn Harrison (1693 1776), English inventor and horologist, or clockmaker, overcame one of the most challenging problems of the 18th century how to determine the longitude of a ship at sea, saving many lives. In so doing, he had to defy the establishment, fight to collect a huge prize offered by Parliament, and wait for decades before receiving the recognition he deserved.Biographers say Harrisons fascination with watches, clocks, and other timepieces can be traced to age six when he welches sick with smallpox, and he entertained himself with a watch his parents placed on his pillow. Watches in those days were very large, and while not very accurate, their works were visible and one could see a relationship between the loud ticking and the watchs mechanical action.Although a carpenter by trade, Harrisons father occasionally repaired clocks, and young John assisted his father in his work as soon as he was old enough. As he grew older, Harrison combined his interest in woodworking and timepieces to begin building clocks and completed his first longcase clock, more commonly called a grandfather clock, in 1713 at the age of 20. It was just a year later that Parliament offered a prize of 20,000 pounds to calculate a ships precise longitude at sea. Harrison decided to go for it.Sailors knew the principle of calculating longitude that for every 15 degrees travelled eastward, the local time moved forward one hour. If they had the local time at two points on Earth, they knew they could use the difference to calculate longitude. While they could measure the local time by observing the sun, they didnt have a reference point such as Greenwich time. This was because the only clocks at the time were pendulum clocks, which quickly became inaccurate by the ships constant motion and temperature changes. Thus, the top prize was enormous because the problem seemed impossible to solve.Astronomers always thought the solution would come from mapping objects in the sky. But Harrison thought there was a mechanical answer, one that would meet the strict criteria of keeping a ship within half a degree of longitude on a voyage from England to the West Indies. That would mean the timepiece had to stay accurate within 2.8 seconds a day, a huge challenge considering temperature changes and the ships motion. He first began work on a land clock much more accurate than any other of the day. Much of the design was conventional, with most parts made of wood and some metal. However, he revolutionized one aspect by eliminating the need for lubricating oil that was often the main reason for clock failure. Oils dried out in summer and became thick in cold temperatures.Meanwhile, working with his younger brother James, in 1720 he was commissioned to design and build a clock tower by wealthy landowner Sir Charles Pelham for the familys estate. With this clock, he made some major design changes that enhanced the stability of the clock. The two brothers continued to design a series of high-precision grandfather clocks that included innovations such as a pendulum rod made of alternate wires of brass and steel, which eliminated the problem of the pendulums effective length increasing in warmer weather, slowing the clock.Satisfied with the exceptional performance of his land clocks, Harrison around 1730 began working on a sea clock and over a period of 20 years produced a series of timekeepers, now referred to as H1, H2, and H3, that were large clocks with special balance mechanisms, compensating for the ships motion. Harrisons work was so highly regarded by the Royal Society, the U.K.s learned science organization, that in 1749 he was awarded the prestigious Copley Medal, the Societys premierminister award. However, none of his clocks were accurate enough to satisfy the conditions to win the top prize. Finally, after 40 years of work, he produced H4, a timepiece that resembled a large pocket watch. This clock not only me t the requirements for Parliaments top prize in a trial but greatly exceeded them. However, for various reasons including that members wanted to win the prize themselves, the Royal Society, which administered the prize money, awarded only a portion of the money and asked for more tests. When the clock did even better, they doled out another portion of the money. But it took the intervention of King George III to get Harrison his full reward and recognition, some 12 years after the horologist had fulfilled the original conditions. Harrison was then 80 years old.He had spent his entire life solving a tough problem, but in the end, it was an accomplishment that significantly benefited the entire world and particularly the field of maritime navigation.Nancy Giges is an independent writer.A year later Parliament offered a prize of 20,000 pounds to calculate a ships precise longitude at sea. Harrison decided to go for it.

If youve been working in the same role for a while and are starting to feel antsy, it can be hard to work out if youre just over your job or your company, or if its time to change direction and embark on a new career altogether. Confounding factors may be a difficult boss, unpleasant work environment or poor team morale, which may have more to do with your organisation than your career itself.Generally speaking, the decision to change careers comes down to a desire to do something totally different and new. Here are a few telltale signs that it might very well be time to think about ditching the old and making a fresh start. You feel bored and unmotivatedYour gut is telling you things are not OKYou get a feeling of dread on Sunday night/Monday morning about goi ng into workYou dont feel good about yourselfYoure taking lots of time offYou feel exhausted/burnt outYoure doing the bare minimum at workYoure working in a dying industryThe first step is to recognise that you need a change. When the business closed, it gave her the impetus to re-evaluate what she wanted to do.I realisedthat I didnt enjoy managing staff and dealing with constant client deadlines. I wanted to do something different. I thought about re-qualifying as a midwife, but when I talked to people working in this area I quickly discovered that being a midwife was more about the mothers journey and I wanted to lo ok after babies. I completed a Certificate III in Childrens Services online and was fortunate to find a stelle in the baby room at the local childcare centre.Juanita said it wasnt necessarily easy leaving behind what she knew and moving into a totally different industry. I took a pay cut, but now I feel good about what I do.
